I experienced this under 0.19-1 (Ubuntu "Breezy"/Gnome), but only
because I didn't
have GTK 1.x installed. After compiling GTK 1.2.10 in addition  to 2.x,
and the newer
CinePaint release 0.21-0, every thing worked out fine--no crashes
anymore. (Important
for me was that the version numbers of libgtk & GTK itself were
identical. At first I
ran into problems  because they didn't match exactly.)

Tabs as in the Gimp would really be nice. It makes the interface more
flexible.
Regarding the quality of the output, Gimp by far doesn't come close to
CinePaint.
Anti-aliasing in the Gimp could be much better. And I agree that the
Gimp has a lot
of filters/Script-Fus I personally will never use. There's an app called
"Eclipse" by
the German company, "Form & Vision", which is basically for compositing
of stills, and
there are a lot of fancy features for masking, etc., as well as an
incredibly beautiful
flare which I really like. ;-) I once had the free version with reduced
functionality
installed,  and this program is really for pros. I couldn't reach the
web site right now,
so I can't say if "Eclipse" is still available (it was mainly for
Windows, maybe for MacOS
as well).

Regarding "Photoshop": I know of at least one Ubuntu user who got Photoshop
running using CrossoverOffice. But "Irita" seems to be nice as well.
