the rawloader plug-in comming with CinePaint has the option to convert to 
WideRGB. Not shure when this newer DCraw feature found its way into 
CinePaint. I think this is the default. The plug-in is exclusive by the 
UFRaw one. You see only one plug-in with a priority to the UFRaw one.

The DCraw colour conversions are simple matrix ones and work as a good 
guess.

To continue with better profiles you will probably have a hard time 
to learn about measuring and using Argyll on command line or LProf with a 
QT UI. Wolf Faust sells cheap targets to start with measured material.

As Bob points out this all is more a just works thing and provides not a 
exact match. Nethertheless I obtained good results with the above tools. I 
could improve over casts from the inbuild jpeg's. With manual tweaking I 
had not much of luck to reach this level.
As nearly all non lowest range camera manufacturers have spent quite some 
work into camera profiling, the inbuild jpeg are a good point to start 
from. 
All natural and including gray colours the human eye is very much trained 
to. Skin tones, sky colours, bright to shadow transitions give a good hint 
of what to look at. This is useful for subjectively checking the quality.

With the camera colours being described by a satisfactory ICC profile you 
can convert, as outlined in the tutorial, to a editing space and edit as 
usual.
