Bad performance with i915 DRI

I have a machine with the Intel GMA950 on the 945GM chipset and I'm
trying to get DRI functional using the i915 driver on Linux with Xorg
7.1.

Everything looks fine; direct rendering is enabled, glxinfo looks good,
no errors anywhere... Yet the graphics performance is exactly the same
if I had DRI disabled. With glxgears I get the usual 1000fps but games
like Nexuiz and Bzflag are completely unplayable.

I can even see interrupts being sent to the chip if I
monitor /proc/interrupts while using 3D, so one could think that the
hardware would really be in use.

How can this be possible? Could it be that there is some problem and
Mesa/DRI/whatever just silently uses software rendering?
