ACPI suspend and ACPI resume is what's typically used when a notebook
(well desktops could support it too) goes into (or comes back
respectively) into power save mode. It is problematic since the graphic
chip may need to be reinitialized. VT switch is somewhat similar though
less chip state needs to be reemitted (if the crashes not happen
immidiately after a VT switch it is likely not related).

Not sure. If it's really related to low-bandwidth, I've no idea what
kind of memory controller tweaks would be necessary to fix it. If it's 
something else, such instabilities are very hard to figure out by what 
they are caused - you could try some other OS to at least rule out the 
hw is not defective.
