dri and mergedfb -- switch cards?

Hi, I got dri working alright in clone mode. But I understand that using 
dri on mergedfb with a virtual resolution of 2560x1024 is not possible 
with my card (2048x2048 limit):

03:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon RV250 If 
[Radeon 9000] (rev 01)

What would I need to do to get it working? Or do I need to replace my 
card with a newer radeon? I like the radeon driver and don't want to 
switch to another one.
