I had similar problems as you described with Savage IX8 and Debian Etch. It
worked one time but then hang.

The SuperSavage IX/C on another Computer didn’t work at all for 3D graphics
with Debian Etch and Ubuntu Feisty Fawn. I always got the error message
„drmMap of framebuffer failed“. Somewhere on the web I read that some
functionality had been moved from one layer to another, which had caused some
incompatabilities.

I finally got my SuperSavage IX/C graphics running. It works with Ubuntu Edgy
Eft. It also works with Feisty Fawn. I only had to take the older X.Org
Savage driver 2.1.1, which is included in Edgy Eft.

(I haven’t yet tested the Savage IX8 with other driver versions.)

I suggest you to try a recent distribution with X.Org 7.* and install savage
driver version 2.1.1 or a bit older (not 2.1.2) by hand, if it isn’t
included.

Good Luck!
