I think EGL is the way to go for opengl without X under linux.
But nowbody got time to work on it. Anyway lately work are
underway to give drm proper memory management and
in kernel video modesetting which in the end make a lot
easier to properly implement EGL, that's my opinion :).

Until more work are put in egl i guess miniglx is the working
option but if you are willing to code a bit i think one can
make egl to work with the modesetting drm branch.
