Thankfully, I happen to be the maintainer of that HOWTO _and_ subscribe to this mailing list at the same time. ;)

That error is telling you you are trying to do too much with the memory your card has. You need to lower the color bpp or resolution. I always use 1024x768 with 16bpp colors. (I haven't tested this in Gutsy, however, so your mileage with the mentioned specs may vary.)
