Try using the -vo x11 setting.  It means you lose the acceleration, but it
makes things work better with that chipset driver and xorg server.  I know
from experience.  Another option is to use fbdev or fbdev2, but they tend t=
o
cause their own share of problems.  I put the following line in a script so
I wouldn't have to remember the switches:

/usr/local/bin/mplayer -fs -zoom -ao alsa -vo x11


for playing DVD's, add -framedrop -cache 8192 -aid 128  (assuming you want
the English 5.1 soundtrack).  One caveat, however, HD and Disney DVD's don'=
t
seem to play right for me, so it may be difficult for you as well.
