3D textures on R300 cards

Hi;

I have a bunch of R300 based cards (X850 and X800) on which 3D textures for
volume rendering does not yet work. It works great on my R200 (9250) cards.

I understand R300 code is in development with the release of documentation.
Would it be better for me to wait for R300 drivers or just go buy R500 cards
(since the mesa drivers are being written from scratch and hence "better".
Am I right in this assumption?) . If so, can anyone suggest a good R500 card
that I can buy?

Any pointers?
