many many variables would contribute to your results, but if a "typical" rip in dvdrip means the default values using the "target media" method, it usually defaults to 2 x 700MB.  a "typical" feature-length movie (90 mins) would come out to 2.5GB if you had a combined (pic and sound) data rate of 3800 kbit/sec. perhaps you flipped over to the BPP tab, before you clicked Transcode.

your zoom and crop choices are factors, too.  the configure button requires you have a certain module installed (read the docs).  de-interlacing (notably, reverse telecine for films) will optimize/reduce the amount of detail to encode.  good luck!
