dvd::rip's cluster mode relies on transcode's ability to chunk VOB 
streams properly and fast, so different nodes can transcode different 
chunks. This chunking is not trivial (mainly because it must consider 
video *and* audio) and AFAIK it currently works only with VOB streams, 
so your friend may have bad luck with his WMV files.

But if it's a huge amount of files, why just distribute the transcoding
on a per file basis? One file per node, but many files in parallel, 
should result in a great overall transcoding performance.
