This chunking is not trivial (mainly because it must consider video *and* audio) and AFAIK it currently works only with VOB streams, so your friend may have bad luck with his WMV files. But if it's a huge amount of files, why just distribute the transcoding on a per file basis? One file per node, but many files in parallel, should result in a great overall transcoding performance.
