[Fresco-devel] Demos run, but no text

I finally managed to compile Fresco and run fresco-demo. The widgets are
displayed, but none of them has any text on them. The FAQ says to set
$BERLIN_FONT_CHOOSER to an empty string before running Berlin to get a list
of fonts to choose from. However, the list had only one font named "Cursor
Regular".

I checked that I have FreeType installed. The fonts on my desktop are
anti-aliased which tells me that FreeType works.
Does anybody know why it can't seem to find the fonts on my system?
