Of course we _are_ interessted in what others (proprietary and free software 
people) do.  I just don't really know what to say about it... You got a 
highly specialized piece of hardware for graphic operations in allmost all 
new computers. It is only natural to try to use it for a GUI environment.

Sure there is, we are not just dumping things onto the screen, are we? ;-)

We (can) use OpenGL for rendering. Of course -- since we are device 
independent -- we do not rely on GL: It's just a fairly full featured 
graphics library with excellent hardware support to us.
