I'v once got quite far, but the generated libraries where so huge I didn't
even try to run the server. I should now at least try to bring the
one piece that depends on TAO - Fresco-C++/config/Makefile.tao.in -
back into sync with the current build system. Shouldn't be that hard.
Then others can pick up and see how far they get...
In any case, if there is a third party dependency I'm least concerned
with it is omniORB, a really great piece of work. Other dependencies
need much more attention...

PS: I see the value in being able to run with another ORB much more
     in the proof that we are standard compliant, read: portable.
