"Herb Hinstorff: We framed a license called the Sun Industry Standards
Source License. We just put it out; it's on the Web. (See Resources.)
We believe it is a license that will appeal to the open source
community and the commercial community. As you know, NFS is licensed
by a lot of commercial entities, and so we have to have something that
will allow a large operating system provider who wants to maintain
their own intellectual property to be able to do that. At the same
time we want to make sure that we've got something that's compatible
with Linux, and allow the University of Michigan to produce a Linux
implementation.

"It takes on different characteristics, but the goal is that we want
people to follow the standard, the standard as set by IETF [Internet
Engineering Task Force]. It's actually in the standards committee
right now, and as long as you follow the standards and don't break the
protocol, you can do anything you want to with the code. You can keep
it to yourself; you can publish it to the world. It doesn't matter.

"If you deviate from the protocol, we require you to do two things: One
is a description of the deviation from the protocol, and two is the
source code as a reference implementation of that deviation. So, if
I'm a company that likes to kind of embrace and extend protocols, I
would have to actually document what I have done and provide a source
code reference implementation."
