I think possibly there should be a remembered state difference between
dead/crashed and stopped.  They are different situations, after all (kill
the connection vs just let it sit there). If the client could transmit the
signal it got, the stopped clients could be treated as stopped and could
be greyed out or something.  Does this sound feasible?
