Just like any other area in open source it seems, all GUIs get started like this,
but there's also quite a lot of junk produced. Look at the existing projects-
if any interest you, work on them. If you have an idea that no existing project
has explored, try it out.

Of course, it's a completely different matter if you just want to write a GUI to
understand better how they work.  This is a good thing to do, but not as good as
coming up with something original ;)
