This problem is known and fixed in CVS. The fix is not  that easy, and your 
proposed solution might result in some misbehaviour. Putenv uses the memory 
pointed to by that char *, so we need to make sure that area stays valid till 
the program ends and not till the string passed into putenv goes out of 
scope..

That's great! I hope you will have fun. You might want to try the CVS version 
though. It should work smoother for you on Solaris then M1.
