I downloaded it, built it (which worked after some manual patching)
and installed the deb. Result: same error as with the up-to-date avifile
package!

This implies that the problem is not in the libavifile package, but
rather somewhere in debian unstable (for example new libtool version,
new gcc version, new libld version, ...).
