Yes.

I get them - and it also gets as slow as with GTK-Wimp.

I managed to switch off the messages (and also compiled my app with 
-mwindows), and this made a big difference! It's hard to say but I think 
it's now as fast as with the default GTK+ theme.

This is now the only remaining big problem for me. FWIW, it happens with
"MS Sans Serif 8" even without using the wimp engine.

Yes, and a great many of them. They even get printed if you just move the 
pointer over the GtkTextArea. IMHO it might be a good idea to rate-limit 
them somehow.
