Actually quite extensive testing, since we had this patch for a long time
with a previous version of Gtk+, and we distributed a complex application using
it to several users, none had any trouble with it.

We then somewhat loose track of this patch when switching to Gtk+ 2.2,
which is when I opened the bug, and then found and put the patch back in
place with no trouble. So the patch looks safe to me, although I cannot
guarantee it is the best way to fix this problem.
