I just did a test and found in IE, the PNG gets displayed with the white
background (if save background color) is selected) and with a gray
background if the background color is NOT saved.  This was with IE 6.

In Opera 7, the image appeared with the proper transparency.  I created a
simple HTML file that had a RED background and the PNG appeared correctly.

I don't know if it's a bug in how IE supports PNG or how GIMP on Windows is
saving PNGs or some combination of the two.

I can e-mail screen shots of Opera 7 and IE 6 showing the same image to
those who ask.

I created the PNG image as follows:

1. Open GIMP
2. From the toolbox, "Xtns/Script-FU/Logos/Alien Glow"
3. Entered "Transparent PNG" as the text and chose a font
4. <Image>/File Save, specified file.png as the filename

I then created a simple HTML file that loaded file.png and opened that HTML
file in both IE 6 and Opera 7 and got the results above.

I've had the same problems.  I'm using IE5.5 and it does view other png's
with transparencies correctly.  Also, if I save the image as a transparent
gif, it works fine.  Also, when I open up the saved png file later, the
transparency is lost and the colors in the image are very distorted,
meaning it does not look anything like the image that was saved.
