You have several kind of png. You can have png with 24bpp or png with only 256 colors (as a gif image). If you save a png with only 255 colors, and with only a binary value for the transparency (just like a gif), IE will show it correctly. If you save a png with 24bpp and with a whole alpha channel, IE will screw it. AFAIR, it will show it using a solid background if you specify a background color when you save the png. If you only need a binary alpha, then save it as an indexed image (Image->Mode->Indexed). If you need the whole alpha channel (for instance, if you have a shadow), then save the image with the same solid background that you have in your web page. If you need the whole alpha channel, and your web page doesn't have a solid background, then change your browser.
