configure process in GTK+

You mean the source code from gtk+-1.3.0-20030115-src.zip? Yes,
indeed, the autogen.sh file (which is in CVS) does seem to be left out
when I do a "make distdir" (from which the aboce zipfile then is
built). I don't know what mechanism causes it to be included in the
official GTK+ source tarballs. (Or is it included in those, even?)

autogen.sh is too automatic ;-) You don't see what stage goes wrong if
something goes wrong. (And on Windows, some step of the process might
well work strangely.) I much prefer to run aclocal, automake, autoconf
and configure manually.
