 The best way to creat a .dds is with the nVida dxt comand line tool 
 A 8192x4096 .tga to .dds(dxt3) takes about 15 min . 
devIL is about to be impalmented in the tool so the conversion time
will be less 
 OR get your self a FREE copy of photo shop  Eliments the dxt plugin
works
