OK, with pango.aliases in place there's no crashing any more.

Another question: It now seems that in a gtktextview, under win32, 
multiple newlines are being collapsed into one.  I.e. what should show 
as

"Bit of text here

More text here"

shows as

"Bit of text here.
More text here."

Can this really be happening?  Am I losing my mind?  (The text in 
question is in Spanish, returned by gettext, if it makes any 
difference.  I swear it was displaying correctly last week.)
