Rob, thank you, thank you, thank you.  This was the problem (I actually had
a copy in winnt and winnt/system32).  I don't know what software installed
these, but everything seems to run fine without them.

I've now put up a copy of the GTK+ 2.0.6-09212002 runtime files on my site
at http://bill.nalens.com/ (under downloads - GKrellM) if anyone wants to
use them.  The installer follows the same basic logic as the installer for
GTK+ 1.3, i.e. it creates registry keys for the version and path; however,
it does not check if a newer version is installed.
