There's a GIMP fork named "GimpShop" that kludges this to a degree, 
but I don't know how current it has remained. Simple answer is, "you 
can't". There are many, primarily from the Windows side, that request 
the MDI interface, but I don't see it happening.

I'm no Windows fan by any means, but I, too would prefer an MDI UI. 
I'll give MS credit on that (if indeed, they came up with the idea?). 
Despite same vague wording in the GIMP FAQ that more or less 
"individual windows are a superior UI", I don't agree. It can get 
very cluttered and MDI solves that.

But once again, unless someone does it, it won't happen. I don't 
think it's likely. If there's something that will truly fix it, 
though, I'm definitely interesting in knowing about it.
