Various new release issues

My error, you're right, the problem is a stale
gimp-ubuntu-splash.xcf file in the "Examples"
directory that's given to a new user account; it
is a splash panel that is from Ubuntu GIMP 2.2,
and since opening that is all I did with GIMP that
time, it left me with the impression that 2.2 was
what I was seeing.

It turns out, when I checked the Help=About menu
item, to be as you said, 2.4 RC3, not the nicest
possible version, but not too far behind the
calendar in real time, either, so probably the wait
for a stable version won't be too long.

I'm not going to trust it for real work until it
catches up to at least 2.4.1, since 2.4.0 seemed to
have some show-stopper issues for several people.

By the way, with respect to the recent "all in one
window" comments, if you open a rich set of docking
tabs in the toolbox, and in particular the images
dialogue, you can pretty easily get to _anything
GIMP_ from the toolbox window, which gets rid of
playing with MS-Windows task bar trying to find
something. I like that, and I like having the tool
control dialog docked in parallel with its own tab
instead of stacked vertically, something I could
probably always do and just never tried.

2.4 looks like a very _usable_ GIMP, now perhaps
the pixel bit depth and CMYK issues will get a
chance to come forward, to make GIMP more functional
for commercial hardcopy arts use.

If one cannot contribute code, one can at least
contribute hope!

There are two issues I'm still not seeing resolved.

First, the upgrade to Script-fu to use Tiny Lisp
broke pretty much every script. Some also went
missing in being "moved to appropriate locations",
and with the prior versions now unusable in Tiny
Lisp, the user seems out of luck. Where is "Save
Selection as Pattern", for example? You can
certainly save an image as a *.pat file, but the
script-fu in prior releases used to put that pattern
into the user's local pattern directory, update the
patterns dialog, and a lot of other stuff that needs
doing by hand now.

Second, over 90% of my gradients that worked with
2.2.12 don't work now, I think because the older
version of GIMP was more forgiving about gradients
with missing or extra lines, and with out of range
RGB component values (like "256"), so that gradient
creators got sloppy, and created gradients that got
broken by the upgrades better checking..
