Text to path strange

I can create a path. Then I make a selection of it. Then I can type in 
the text. I hit  text to path and the text jumps to the path but then 
its "hollow" text and the original solid color text is still behind or 
above or below and it cannot even be gotten rid of.

Thus I end up with outlined text ON the path and solid text on the layer.

What am I doing wrong?
