Fonts look all wrong, not smooth

Hi all,
Please forgive me if this question has been addressed
before.
I'm trying to make an image with text but the fonts
look all "chunky", they aren't smooth.
I have GIMP running on another windows pc and it works
fine there. Is there some setting that I've missed or
does this computer not have enough "oomphf" to render
the fonts correctly.
This pc is an 1.6GHz Pentium 4 with 1.5 GB of RAM
running windows XP home.
I really appreciate any help.
