You might have been lucky with this : I wouldn' t make a general rule upon a 
single experience :
Did you use "GIMP on an USB"  on a machine where VC++ runtimes where already 
installed :

Some users haven't been as lucky as you are Greg !
Meanwhile , we grandly appreciate your comment when
you see no difference ...
