File from Photoshop designer

If I get a web graphic project file from a Photoshop designer, will 
I  be able to open it or convert it to some form that I can edit it in GIMP.

Or how would I tell them to convey it to me in a form that I can 
modify it in GIMP?

What would be the name of their project file that would compare to a 
GIMP .xcf file?
