Open File/Preferences/Display and verify the horizontal and vertical monitor resolutions are equal.

I'm using GIMP 2.4.6 and previously 2.4.5 with windows Vista with all
updates. I can open an image and it is not distorted but the rulers in
the margins are distorted,not the same, the vertical ruler is not
proportional to the horizontal ruler. In other words the vertical
ruler from 0-500 is longer than the horizontal ruler from 0-500. This
is no big deal but when I try to select an area of a photo for
cropping with the rectangular selection tool set to 'fixed ratio' of
4:6 (for a 4x6 print) the selection is actually more like 4x8. This is
mighty strange and I haven't a clue what's causing it or how to fix
the problem (if there is a fix)
