To answer this second question, GraphicsMagick provides a -limit option which may be used to apply resource limits. Besides decreasing the estimated limits, it may be used to increase the limit. There are matching environment variables: MAGICK_LIMIT_DISK, MAGICK_LIMIT_FILES, MAGICK_LIMIT_MEMORY, and MAGICK_LIMIT_MAP. Setting the memory and map limits to extremely high values should ensure that memory is always used. Note that when the memory used is larger than the machine's physical memory, then virtual memory is used, which results in system paging which may become "thrashing" under extreme conditions.
