Well, I agree: It's a good idea to build things from small(est) blocks 
to understand what's going on. There's nothing wrong with using the STL, 
but without at least some knowledge of the inner workings, it can be a 
much harder way.

The next thing for me is to extract parts of the resulting image 
(rectangular and polygon shapes), and I think, it's going to be an 
interesting journey :)
