On a remote Solaris system, I did gm display -display foo:0.0 with DISPLAY unset and it did display locally as expected. As far as I am aware, -display simply copies its argument into ImageInfo->server_name, so this should be a useful test. I am unsure about ordering requirements. Perhaps there is a point beyond which the value is no longer used? Permutations of invalid display arguments produce error messages which show that this value is being used. I also tested with the DISPLAY environment variable set. Does the command line -display option work for you?
