I am perfectly willing to suspect that there is a bug or anomaly in GM since I have never done more than command-line test this feature and it hardly ever gets tested (by me). However, it seems that since it does not work for you with 'gm display' that it may be a platform-specific issue. Are you able to help with diagnosing it?
