ERROR: function LockSemaphoreInfo, file magick/semaphore.c, line 525

When attempting to use the 'gm' command to convert a PNG to a JPG, I get the
following error:
Assertion failed: (semaphore_info != (SemaphoreInfo *) NULL), function
LockSemaphoreInfo, file magick/semaphore.c, line 525.
The command I'm using is:
gm convert -resize "500x500>" -quality 85 horses.png horses-med.jpg
I get the same exact error with the simplified command:
gm convert horses.png horses-med.jpg
or gm convert horses.png horses-med.png
Conversions with other file types seem to work, but PNG conversions do not.
I'm trying this on a Mac with the latest OSX. Is this a known bug? Is
there a work-around?
'make check' also fails against the PNG images. I've installed the Mac
build of libpng.
