The cause has been found.  It is fixed by adding one line of code to 
an error case.  The fix is in Mercurial changeset 16565:5ff36992c204 
and is in the latest development snapshot.

The underlying cause which triggered the issue is that there is no 
Helvetica font installed on the system.  The problem is limited to the 
CAPTION coder.
