GraphicsMagick's display program does not support a full opacity 
channel under X11.  This is apparently due to X11's capabilities.  A 
work-around is to composite the image on top of a background pattern 
image so you can see the effect of the opacity channel.  A 
checkerboard image is commonly used (ala GIMP) as the background 
pattern to overlay the image on.

I have been thinking about adding built in background compositing 
(optionally enabled) to the X11 display program.  This was already 
done for the Windows version.
