Highjacking your tiff post.. I have been sent a tiff file:
% file "ni melting.tiff"
ni melting.tiff: TIFF image data, big-endian
% gm identify "ni melting.tiff"
gm identify: No decode delegate for this image format (ni melting.tiff).
% ldd `which gm`
/usr/local/bin/gm:
