If I use

   gm convert orig.jpg -colorspace rgb crap.jpg

then crap.jpg looks ok to me so I think that there is an ordering 
issue with your sample command.  It is true that your sample command 
used to work as you expect, but now it is interpreted somewhat 
differently so that -colorspace can be used to specify the colorspace 
of the input file.

I do believe that there is a problem with 'display' not ensuring that 
the image is converted to RGB space prior to display.  I have noticed 
this bug before.
