GraphicsMagick performance on Linux

The folks at Phoronix have released a new benchmark report today 
comparing performance between various Linux kernel releases, and up to 
Linux kernel 2.6.29.  For some time now, GraphicsMagick 1.3.3 has been 
part of the Phoronix Test Suite.

Some interesting tidbits from the report regarding Linux kernel 
2.6.29:

   "there are significant gains when running GraphicsMagick on the 
Linux 2.6.29 kernel. The number of iterations per minute at the HWB 
color space operation with GraphicsMagick had jumped from 59 to 83"

   "The blur performance with GraphicsMagick had jumped from 25 to 40 
with Linux 2.6.29"

   "The performance is nearly doubled when it comes to the local 
adaptive thresholding performance with GraphicsMagick using the Linux 
2.6.29 kernel."

The most interesting thing to me about the whole benchmark report is 
that OpenSSL was the only other software in the whole suite to see a 
performance improvement.  I am pretty sure that the 7-Zip compressor 
is multi-threaded but it saw a drop in performance.  Every 
GraphicsMagick algorithm included in the benchmark saw a huge 
performance boost with this new kernel.

The ability to continually improve GraphicsMagick performance via 
hardware and kernel refinements confirms that we made the right choice 
by re-implementing the algorithms to use OpenMP.
