If you installed from source code, the most likely cause of the problem is if the packages corresponding to the X11 developement header files were not installed when the configure script was run. Often the names of such packages end with '-dev'. Observe the summary at the end of the configure run. It will tell you if X11 is supported. What operating system are you using?
