updating libwebp

Hi all, I have a question regarding the WebP support in GM, specifically as to whether it is possible to get my existing copy of GM to use a newer build of libwebp.
I have a Debian 9 box with the stock versions of php-gmagick, libgraphicsmagick, and libwebp, 2.0.4-rc1, 1.3.25-8, and 0.5.2-1 respectively.
Alongside that, I also have version 0.6.1 of libwebp compiled from source, soon to be updated to version 1.0.0.

The newer version of libwebp is installed in /usr/local/lib/ whereas the system-installed one is in /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/

If I install/copy the newer libraries for libwebp into /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/ will GM automatically use the newer version of libwebp?

I suspect the best solution long-term is to compile GM from scratch, but I'm not quite ready to make that jump at the moment, so I'm hoping that a simple update of the libraries is sufficient here.

Thanks,
Shane
