Those who lack skills can sometimes find someone else with the skills 
who is interested in working on the problem.

Quite a lot of time can be spent with understanding a problem and then 
implementing the fix might be relatively trivial.

Working on the C code is not for the faint of heart, but at least it 
is full of helpful comments and there is a good test suite.
