Linux is an operating system kernel, not an operating system.  Linux 
does not provide any fonts beyond perhaps to support console text when 
booting or a boot splash screen.  Various Linux distributions provide 
different fonts and install them into different directories.

Microsoft Windows is different since it is a complete operating 
system.

Linux is actually strange that it is only a kernel given that most of 
the competition provides a complete operating system.

Perhaps one of the most useful sites to address concerns is the Free 
Desktop project which has a wiki at 
"https://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/".  This project has developed 
useful standards which help surmount differences in Linux 
distributions.
