Image statistics

At long last, GraphicsMagick 1.1 supports computing image statistics.
As of this evening, there is a GetImageStatistics function which
populates a ImageStatistics structure with channel-level (e.g.
'red') image statistics.  The image statistics currently available are
minimum, maximum, mean, variance, and standard deviation.  Values are
normalized to the range 0.0 to 1.0.  The interface supports adding
additional statistics without breaking the API.

For Magick++, there is a new Image statistics() method to obtain these
statistics.

The statistics are output by 'gm identify -verbose'.  The statistics
output of identify is scaled up to the actual image quantum values
(e.g. 255).  Feedback is desired regarding the best way to present
these values since normalized values are often more useful.  If there
is demand for it, both normalized and unnormalized values can be
displayed.
